This might seem like a no brainer to some, but to me.. it was a hard thing to learn and make myself do..
I’m talking about the ability to be like “heyy wait, you over charged me” or “heyy I asked for x and I got y”. Being able to is pivotal to staying on budget.
Great Example.. Yesterday at Walgreens, I had my trip planned down to the penny.. And it was two dollars over..I was a little shocked, I couldn’t have been that far off. Check the receipt, low and behold I was charged for two chapsticks! Went back in, got my $2 back.
Or at Walmart.. When they were like “we’re sorry miss we can’t give you the overage on these coupons”. First of all I know that that is a load of bull.. but I asked for a manager after speaking with the cashier and realizing she was just really confused {it’s a long story}… and he came over, checked everything out, turns out they can {and did} give me the overage..
You can’t not say something, even if it’s the difference of saving $0.05 … that’s $0.05 towards rent or your next grocery trip. Five cents is Five cents, don’t let someone else talk you out of your money. I used to just ignore it when it would be a little over and just think I got it wrong.. while yeah sometimes I do.. most of the time it scanned wrong or their system hadn’t registered it as a sale, or whatever… But the tighter and tighter my budget got, the more and more I realized that I can’t just walk away from that. Money is money and we all work really hard for it.
Yes, a little bit of a weird blog post, but important none the less. Because when you’ve got next to nothing in your bank account, every single penny is going to count {literally!}.
So for the record:
-It is OK to ask for a Manager at a Store when the cashier can’t help you.
-It is OK to be in line and say “Wait…. this is supposed to be x,y,and z not that”
-It is OK to check your receipt realize something went wrong and go back in, and have them fix it.
-It is OK to say “On second thought I don’t want x, y or z” { it happens to all of us, don’t think you have to buy it!}
-But.. It is not OK to get really upset with the poor cashier who might not have any idea on what you’re talking about… it might be a hassel to go to customer service or call a manager over, but it’s worth it because it smooths things over quicker
And when in doubt… Bring a friend with you! It’s always a bit easier when you have moral support!
I’ve got a few epic recipes coming up! And also, I’ve signed us up for a site off of Fastpaleo, so when I’ve got it all up and running, we can start having everyone post recipes for POAB, and then I’m going to feature some of them on the Blog too! So excited!!
I was at Publix yesterday morning for a weekly shopping trip. I checked my receipt late yesterday afternoon and saw that a pizza pan I purchased had rung up at regular price ($5.49) instead of the sales price ($3.99). So last night, I took it back in to customer service and asked her to check the price on it. I was right! AND…Publix’s policy is that if something rings up incorrectly, they will give it to you for FREE! So I got my full refund AND took my pizza pan back home! 🙂
Nice! I wish we had a Publix…. But now I want to check to see what our store policy is on that!
This is great advice and not a weird blog post at all! Some grocers will give you the item free if it doesn’t scan correctly. My DH bought 2 packages of mushrooms a few days ago, which were supposed to be 2 for 1. He had even bought some earlier in the week and had been charged correctly. But this was late in the day before the ad expired, and he noticed both scanned at the regular price. He went back in, expecting the error to be corrected, but found out the store policy is to give you the item free if it scans the wrong price! Thus, two free packages of mushrooms. Absolutely worth checking the receipt, going back in and standing in line a couple of minutes.
I need a grocery store with this policy… or at least have Walgreens have this policy! I’d be rich.. kind of lol! And you’re right it is completely worth it to check out the receipt!
