Coconut Oil…meet my paleo friends. Paleo Friends.. Meet coconut oil. He happens to be my new best friend.
Isn’t he cute?
So I’ve been reading that coconut oil is better for you than olive oil and most paleo recipes I’ve found call for it. The problem is the sticker shock. Hi $8.99 for one jar..you’re hurting my soul. But I decided almost 2 weeks ago to give it a go, see what it did.
I haven’t even dented the Jar and I’m in love. My eggs fry up better, my food cooks more evenly. It’s pure awesomeness. But I know I know.. $8.99 freaking a lot of money for one jar.
•Here’s how the math breaks down per month.•
•Olive Oil: 2 bottle per month @ $4.99 = $9.98 / 4 weeks in a month = $2.50 / 7 days in a week = $0.36 per day / 2 uses {on average} daily = $0.18 per serving
•Coconut Oil: 1 Jar per month @ $8.99 / 4 weeks in a month = $2.24 / 7 days in a week = $0.32 per day/ 2 uses {on average} daily = $0.16 per serving
{I’m predicting that the coconut oil lasts longer than a month..but for argument sake well call it a month}
So It’s cheaper. And it’ll completely rock when I figure out how long it lasts.
Quick Tip: When using it remember it melts down and coats a pan really well, start off with less add more it’s going to save you a lot of money that way. Also..Unrefined coconut oil please! Spectrum {brand shown & the one I bought} has an unrefined, that if it’s all you can find isn’t horrible and will do the job. Just use less of it..ok? Thanks!
I’m going to start a media page of images and stuff that you can download and use as you like and also to keep you updated on the latest happenings in the Paleo world..It’ll be up by tomorrow so stay tuned!
Liz! I’ve become addicted to coconut oil too! I first bought it to cook with, but now am using it for everything. I had to buy an extra jar to keep in the bathroom – I use it on my hair, my face, my body… I’m going through it like mad and I love it!
Here’s my recent coconut oil post, if you’re interested. I think we used the same photo. :0D

This is where I usually buy mine. 🙂 But I’m definitely going to check out the amazon thing.
We purchase our coconut oil from Mountain Rose Herbs, really cheap. However, it comes in gallon increments. Last time we purchased it, we weren’t paleo, but still using quite a bit more than the average family (though with 4 kids and using it for more than cooking – diaper rashes!), was in October ’10. But the stuff doesn’t go bad either. I think we might have to repurchase by August since we’ve gone paleo and use a LOT!
