I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to post about bacon. Seriously, I love….love love love bacon. It is the most amazing thing ever. I will admit, I have met some people who don’t like bacon, if you’re one of those people. I’m sorry, I promise to post something not – bacon related next time!
So why the sudden bacon post. Well bacon is expensive..really expensive depending on where you buy it. For me It’s always been hard to find bacon without sugars or some sort of “flavoring” for a decent price. I think the cheapest I got it was somewhere between 0.5 lbs – 0.75 lbs for $4.00 or more. And it’s not even good bacon. It’s old.. It doesn’t actually hold a shape.. doesn’t get crispy. Its yucky once you’ve had good quality bacon.
Oh and I just discovered good quality bacon! Yesterday I took a tiny road trip to my local meat house { The Meat House’s website..they’ve got a ton of locations } Sadly, they’ve got grain-fed beef, but they’ll order grass fed for you if you ask! The staff was super friendly, easy to talk to, and the store is amazing. It’s like your favorite organic store..with a lot of meat {and wine!}. They even have a few raw cheeses. I mean come on, how much better could it get right…
Well.. It can get better. They have slab bacon. It’s a delightful bacon with nothing on it. No maple, no sugar, no brown sugar … nothing.. just amazing bacon. And it’s fresh! Oh..and only $4.99 a pound! We’re going to get 3 meals out of that {well.. 2 meals and then a snack. We got it home and couldn’t wait to try it out!} Which makes it $0.83 per serving. Hi Cheap and yummy bacon!
The best part is..this is literally the best bacon I’ve ever had in my entire life. It gets nice and crispy, cooks evenly, lots of flavor, works amazingly with other meals. So good.
So now we go into how to cook bacon. Alright some of you might want to fork over the stupid sign to me.. I mean obvious right…Pan..Stove.. cook.. done. But wait! Not so fast you.
What about baking it? Or..*gasp* Grilling?
That’s right.. I saw a picture of someone who grills their bacon. I need a grill.. and then I’m going to try this. But how could it not be awesome?
As for the baking, I don’t have the right pan for it so I haven’t done it yet.
You need:
• A Baking rack { see picture }
• One additional pan {one bigger or the same size as baking rack}.
How To:
You’d want to line the other pan with aluminum foil for super easy clean up.
I’ve seen a bunch of different recipes with varied times. I’d say start at 350, for about 10-15 minutes and watch it.
Depending on how thick your bacon is will depend on how fast it cooks. Also if you get bacon with sugar on it.. it’ll cook a bit different.
Baking your bacon, will keep it nice and crispy and it won’t crinkle as much! I’ve heard its super yummy so try it if you can and let me know.
Oh and that bacon grease? Don’t throw it away. Save it! Use it in your cooking instead of coconut oil. If I’m making bacon topped burgers, I’ll make my bacon first and use the bacon grease to cook my burgers in for extra yummy. Or cooking veggies in the bacon grease.. oh man.. do it. Don’t toss it!
How was that for bacon 101. Now I bet you’re hungry.. Ha I am too… Thank goodness I’ve got bacon in the fridge and I’m putting it in the Chicken Salad {along with the left over ground beef I have!} tonight.
[…] right …. you’re not reading it wrong.. ohh no.. the amazing bacon I blogged about earlier? well… it had a baby with hard boiled eggs… and let me tell […]
