I know I know…. I said I had a black { or worse than black } thumb. But I mean… come on I had to at least give it a try again! I decided on plants that had already grown up a bit.. and weren’t so easily killed off! Hopefully I know what I’m doing. I bought all Bonnie Plants {the containers are bio-degradable.. so the transplant shock isn’t as bad [so I’ve read]}. They seem to be hearty and really healthy lil’ buggers. The Bonnie Plants website is awesome though, they give great information and all the how-to whatevers you can think of {even trouble shooting}. Go take a peak! I’m so excited. Plus.. I’m thinking of it this way, if the tomatoes do their thing, I’ll be able to make tomato sauces and freeze them for the winter and not have to buy any for a very long time {and I won’t have that whole what the heck is in it battle}. That’s saving roughly.. $4.00-$5.00 at least {I use more tomato sauce in the winter} per week! It adds up quick! And that’s just the tomatoes! Plus the herbs will last year round if I take super good care of them.
So now you’re asking yourself what the heck did I get.. well.. here’s my list!
•Basil
•Rosemary
•Parsley
•Roma Tomato
•Tomato Hybrid
•Strawberries
•Jalapeno Pepper
•Cucumber
•Zucchini
My Balcony looks so good! And it smells amazing. Kyra { my dog } thinks that the entire garden is hers.. she seems to get very upset if you go to look at them without her permission.. and she has to “inspect” {I.E. Sniff them} all the time {see photo below!}. It’s so stinking cute!
So I figure I’ll keep you guys up to date on my progress with the gardening. I’m hoping to do well enough this year to cut back on buying these things and what I can make with it. If all goes well next year my goal is to expand this little balcony garden, and not have to purchase anything over the summer as well as the winter!
If you decide to do some form of a garden this year and want to buy plants similar to what I did.. Make sure you shop around. Containers were a milion times cheaper {and soil} at walmart. But oddly enough the Bonnie Plants were cheapest at Home Depot, and looked better and had a better selection. It’s worth it to price everything out first. That way you don’t overspend …. the containers for them are the easiest way to overspend, Walmart had the bigger ones for $3.00 a piece and the smaller ones for $1.00 a piece. The soil is another thing to seriously shop around for. We bought a 1ct bag for $5.50 … at Home Depot it was $9.00 and it went up from there depending on where else you went.
Let me know if you’re gardening this summer! I want to hear all about it 🙂
Oh and on a totally random note…. I made Coconut Crusted Chicken tonight … oh my gosh was it ever yummy. I’ll post the recipe tomorrow!
